The Teams: Two teams of six friends, led by attorneys The Project: A creative patio project The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) Appearing in front of judges is routine for these legal eagles -- they should definitely be able to withstand the pressure of competition! Let's meet the teams: Red Team ("Garage Guys") Greg McMillan Jay Harkins Michael Hulsey Blue Team ("Hammerheads") Sam Doak David Sapp John Willis Warrior Team Trivia: Red Team captain Greg McMillan says his most interesting building project was helping build a transport cage for an 800-pound sea lion! Creating a Concept (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) The Red Team decides on an outdoor-living project -- a meditation garden table filled with sand and surrounded by chairs. (The team says the table design is designed to keep children busy so parents can socialize.) - The team measures and cuts 2x4s for the sandbox table frames -- a top and bottom frame. Then they assemble the pieces (figure A).
- Once the top and bottom frame sections are assembled, the Red Team measures and cuts plywood for the table base.
- The team measures and marks the plywood before cutting square notches (figure B) for support posts. For easier cutting, they employ a a cross-cut technique: First, both small vertical cuts are made, then a diagonal cut is made from the front corner of the notch to an opposing back corner. To complete the notch, a final straight cut is made in the opposite direction at the back of the marked area.
- After notches are cut for the support posts, the posts are measured and cut.
Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) The Blue Team decides on an elaborate arbor that will support a swing 5' in width. - To begin, the Blue Team measures and cuts 12x12s for the arbor rafters.
- The team measures and cuts redwood for the swing, before cutting the lumber to be used as support posts (figure C).
- The arbor frame -- including the support posts -- is assembled (figure D).
