Champions of the battle: the Blue Team!

With the clock running out, the teams drive toward the end zone -- the end of the competition and the judges' decisions!

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Red Team moves forward, measuring and cutting lumber for the A-frame support for the swing beam.

    • After assembling the A-frame (figure A), the team discovers their structure has a slight foul -- the structure is too tall.

    • The team makes a quick recovery and cuts the A-frame structure down before assembling the swing beam (figure B) and drilling holes for hardware.

    • The Red Team attaches the swing beam to the main frame, adds the swings and fills the sandbox with sand to complete the project.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • After checking their field position, the Blue Team pushes ahead to finish their design. First they measure and cut lumber for the swing support beam.

    • Then the team attaches the swing beam to the upper platform (figure C) and drills holes for the swing hardware.

    • Finally the swing is secured and sand is added to complete the project.

    The Final Moment

Game's over! The projects are revealed and judging begins.

    Score Summary:

Although the teams have created very similar designs, the Red Team had a few structural snafus (figure D). In the end, it's the Blue Team's unique touches (figure E) -- the adjustable-angle climbing wall, hand grips and rope ladder -- that score big with the judges.

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
