    First Quarter: Developing a Game Plan (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Red Team begins by developing a game plan. The team decides how best to tackle the challenge and spends extra time designing their play structure. The team decides on a two-story structure with a ground-level sandbox, swing and slide.

    • With a plan in place, the Red Team begins measuring and cutting the lumber (figure A) needed for the base and overhead platform of the structure.

    • Once the pieces have been cut, the team assembles the base for the play structure and adds floor joists to the overhead platform (figure B).

    • The team proceeds to measure and cut lumber for the upright supports.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • To warm up, the Blue Team takes inventory of equipment and supplies before developing a design. The team decides that a five-sided structure that includes a center opening for a rope ladder, climbing wall, slide and swing will best utilize their abilities and supplies.

    • With a design in hand, the team starts running the play. They begin by cutting lumber for the upright supports, leaving extra lumber for extended footers.

    • Next the team cuts lumber for the base frame (figure C).

    • The base is secured to the upright supports to create a frame structure.

    • Then the team raises the support frame (figure D) before measuring and cutting wood for the overhead platform.
