Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - To support the overhead frame, the Red Team measures and cuts 4 x 6 posts.
- Then, the team uses the circular saw to cut one end of the 2 x 8s at a 45-degree angle.
- Next, the team uses screws to connect the 2 x 8s at the angle cut.
- The Red Team has decides to use 4 x 4 lumber as spacers between the posts and the overhead 2 x 8 pieces. The team measures and cuts the 4 x 4 pieces to the correct size, then inserts and attaches the pieces to the rafter assembly (figure A) using a cordless drill and screws.
Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. -1 p.m.) - After tracing a pattern onto the plywood, the team members use a jig saw to cut the patterns from the plywood (figure B), then stack all the pieces into a large pile.
- Then, the team staggers the plywood at different lengths, then trims the pieces to create a "stair step" effect. A power planer is used to shape the edges.
- To stack of plywood is joined together by glue and screws to create a pedestal (figure C).
