The Project: An original arbor design.

    The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

It's left-brained versus right-brained in a battle to build the best arbor! The Red Team consists of an engineer, woodworker and landscape professional, while the artistic Blue Team is comprised of three professional sculptors. Let's meet the teams:

    Red Team (The Craftsmen)

    Steve Gilreath
    Jim Miller
    Jason Miller

    Blue Team (The Artists)

    Nailing Down the Arbor Designs (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The red team concepts a large arbor with three main pieces, designed to support large vines (such as wisteria).

    • With the design in place, the team traces the pattern for the ends of the overhead rafters onto heavy-duty cardboard to use as a template.

    • Next, the team transfers the pattern onto the large piece of 2 x 8s (figure A), which will be used as the rafters.

    • The team then uses a jig saw to cut the pattern on each rafter's end (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • After deciding on an abstract design, the Blue Team undertakes the challenge of building an artistic arbor.

    • First, the team measures and "rips" the plywood into rectangular pieces using a table saw (figure C).

    • A piece of ornamental molding is cut in half for pliability, then used as a guide to trace an arc onto the plywood (figure D).
