Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - To finish their entertainment center, the Red Team adds accent lighting to the frame (figure A) and installs the components. Because the team desired a contrast between the wood, supports and the high-tech components, the wood was left unfinished.
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Blue Team works quickly to finish their project. They begin by installing shelf brackets.
- After the brackets are securely in place, the support walls and shelves are assembled (figure B) using glue and nails.
- The team sanded rough edges and applied putty to the nail holes. Once the putty dried, the Blue Team sanded the piece a second time before adding decorative molding to all front shelf edges (figure C), as well as "rope" trim to the top and side edges.
- A hole is cut in the back panel for cords and cables.
- To complement their traditional design, the team quickly stains the entire unit before adding components and accessories.
The Final Moment Before the judging begins, the warehouse door opens and the warriors are allowed to scrutinize their rivals' archetypes. Score Summary: While the judges complimented the craftsmanship and detailed approach on the Blue Team's traditional entertainment unit (figure D), it's the Red Team (figure E) -- through innovative design and skillful execution -- that emerges victorious. Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
