    The Project: An entertainment center

    The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

Building houses for charity takes brains, brawn, determination and good teamwork. Today's challenge will give the teams an opportunity to put these traits to the test. Let's meet the teams:

    Red Team (Knoxville, TN)

    Eric Haralson
    Dave Richardson
    Frank Rothermel

    Blue Team (Greater Canton, OH)

    Lorin Byler
    Karla Arnold
    Bill Pressler

Warrior Team Trivia: Members of both teams have worked to complete entire Habitat for Humanity houses in only a few weeks!

Before planning and executing their respective designs, both teams carefully measure the Philips Electronics digital entertainment components that each unit will house.

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • After taking 65 minutes to plan and sketch out their project (figure A), the Red Team gets under way with their design for an entertainment center that can be suspended from the ceiling. Because the warehouse lacked an area where the unit could safely be suspended, the team decides to create a frame that can be removed as desired. The team's first step is to cut lumber at the correct angle to make the A-frame shelf support.

    • The A-frame is assembled (figure B) and a cross-brace support system is added.

    • While attaching the vertical supports to the top frame, the team has trouble determining the appropriate cut angles for the pieces. The design is modified so that the vertical beams attach to the inside of the top frame, where the joints will be hidden (figure C)

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team's design -- an entertainment center that will also serve as a storage area for accessories and extra components -- has taken close to 90 minutes to plan. Once the plan is in place (figure D), the team begins by cutting birch plywood panels for the back and sides of the unit.

    • The team then uses a table router to create rabbet joints on the edges of the plywood panels and ensure a secure fit.

    • After finding some of the original measurements to be incorrect, the team modifies the design by cutting some of the panels shorter.
