    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • With only two hours left, the Firedogs assemble the roof gables, attach the plywood ceiling to the frame and then attach the gables to the roof (figure A).

    • The next step is cutting the plywood panels for the roof and putting them in place, at the same time adding an attic door (attached with a piano hinge).

    • They build a box from 2x4s to be filled with cedar chips for the ventilation system.

    • They cut two openings and attach dog doors (figure B). Then the doghouse is painted and extras, such as a feeding station, are added.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • To create the illusion of depth, the team adds faux gables to the front facade and trim work to the exterior (figure C).

    • Some touch-up paint is needed, and the doghouse is ready for the final addition: dog beds and feeders and lots of dog chews (figure D)!

    The Final Moment

At long last, the moment of truth arrives, as the partition door is opened and the judges come in to inspect the two doghouses (figure E and figure F).

Score Summary: The judges, clearly impressed by both teams' efforts, quiz them about the materials they used, as well as various features they included in the structures. The Blue Team's beautiful Victorian doghouse is a big hit with all the judges, but even though the Red Team's more conventional doghouse isn't completed, the features inside garner a high creativity score. The ventilation system and the interior wall that can be collapsed to accommodate a bigger dog also win them big points. The final score is very close, but the Red Team emerges as the winner.

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
