    The Project: A One-Size-Fits-All Doghouse

    The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

Before the competition gets under way, we meet the two teams of warriors that will design and build two state-of-the-art doghouses appropriate for any size dog:

    Red Team (Oak Ridge, TN)

    Todd Derrick (team captain)
    Laura Davis
    Ron Buckham

    Blue Team (Knoxville, TN)

    Jeff Conard (team captain)
    D. J. Corcoran
    Tracy May

Warrior Team Trivia: The two teams come from neighboring cities in East Tennessee: the Blue team (a.k.a. the Smoker Soakers) from Knoxville and the Red team (a.k.a. the Atomic Firedogs) from Oak Ridge.

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • All the Firedogs agree: they want their structure to resemble a fire station! After drawing up preliminary plans, they begin measuring and cutting 2x4 pressure-treated lumber for the subfloor and floor joists

    • Next they construct the floor frame and add the joists (figure A).

    • The next step is cutting 1/2" insulation board and attaching it to the floor frame.

    • Finally, they cut plywood for the floor and attach it to the frame on top of the insulation (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • At first the Blues also thought about building a doghouse to look like a fire station, but they have decided instead to create a Victorian-style triplex perfect for the multidog family.

    • The first step is cutting the roof peaks of the front facade so Tracy can begin painting them (figure C).

    • The Blue Team also uses pressure-treated 2x4s for the subfloor, but they will be using synthetic decking boards -- which will provide some insulation and also be washable with a garden hose -- for the floor itself.

    • The team cuts the 2x4s and begin framing the floor (figure D). They run a chalk line to mark the joists; at these points, they'll drive screws to hold the floor in place.
