    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • To complete their fire truck design, the Red Team sets to work painting the bed's base frame and ladders (figure A). The final color combination is striking -- the frame boasts the same vibrant red as the facade, while the crisp white of the upper railing and luminous silver of the ladder provide an attractive contrast (figure B).

    • Once the bed is painted, the team secures the finished facade to the front of the frame with screws, then cuts and paints a length of PVC pipe to serve as the fireman's pole prop.

Note: The pole featured here is used only as a visual detail. PVC pipe should not be used as any type of structural support and should never be used for climbing.

    • With the fire-truck design complete, all that's left for the Red Team to do is make up the bed!

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • With the bed now complete except for the canopy lights, the Blue Team decides to build the matching entertainment center before attaching the lights to the bed.

    • They begin by measuring and cutting the plywood pieces for the cabinet using a table saw. Next, they use a cordless drill and screws to assemble the structure, then they secure each piece with nails and wood glue.

    • Having completed the exterior of the cabinet, the team adds shelf brackets to the interior of the framework, then measures and cuts the wood for the shelves.

    • After painting the interior of the cabinet (figure C), they set the shelves in place, completing the entertainment center.

    • And now for the bed's finishing touches: the team attaches the tap lights (figure D) to the bed frame to illuminate the canopy and outfits the bare mattress with bright-red bedding. Then they get ready for the judges' arrival!

    The Final Moment

As the large doors dividing the Red and Blue areas are rolled back, both teams are anxious to see the others' work -- and to find out which one will win the judges' high score!

Score Summary: The judges were thrilled with both beds (figure E and figure F) and knew right away that any kid would love either one. The creativity and thought put into the fire truck, particularly with the accessories like the ladder, pole, headlights and grill, helped push the red team to victory (see score sheets below).

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
