    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The Red Team's next step is to measure and cut the lumber for their upright supports. Once the supports are ready, the platform is turned upside down and the supports are attached to its underside.

    • Next, the structure is turned upright and angle brackets are secured under the platform for extra reinforcement.

    • With the bed's basic framework complete, the team measures and cuts the wood for the two ladders, assembles them and finally attaches them to the bed. One is positioned vertically, for climbing, and the other is turned horizontally to serve as a railing.

    • Meanwhile, progress on the facade continues: The team has traced, cut out and painted the FDNY logo, which they glue carefully in place below the windshield. Tap lights are attached on both sides of the grill as headlights (figure A).

    • The final detail of the facade is the bumper, which is created with a 1x4 cut to size and wrapped with roof flashing (figure B). The edges of the flashing are gently dented with a hammer to help it conform to the board. Once it's complete, the bumper is secured to the facade along the bottom edge, just beneath the headlights.

      Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • Having completed the pulley system feature of their design, the Blue Team turns their attention to the top of the bed, where they're preparing to create a domed canopy. To create the dome, they cut four lengths of plumber's tape (thin metal strips) to arch over the top frame, then secure them on both sides of the frame with screws (figure C).

    • To create the canopy cover, the team cuts a large piece of sturdy bright-blue fabric to fit over the arched supports and uses a staple gun to secure it to the sides of the upper frame (figure D).

    • For the last detail of the bed, the team measures and cuts the fabric for the bedskirt, which they staple in place along the bottom edge of the platform.
