Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - With most of the platform frame complete, the Red Team measures and cuts a plywood cover for the platform, allowing an extra foot of overhang.
- Next, they take a measurement to determine the point where a fireman's pole will pass through the platform. Once the outline of the hole is marked, they cut out the circle using a jigsaw.
- To complete the platform, the team attaches the plywood cover and reinforces the underside with 2x4 supports (figure A).
- In order to have the fire truck facade ready when the framework of the bed is complete, the team has divided up to work on both elements simultaneously. Having cut the plywood for the facade earlier, the team now cuts two 2' x 2' holes for the windshield, then uses a table saw to cut two Plexiglas (TM) pieces for the "glass."
- The plywood is then primed, painted fire-engine red and embellished with a silver-painted wood frame around the windshield and a square of silver mesh for the "grill" (figure B).
Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - While the Red Team wraps up work on the platform and begins adding detail to the facade, the Blue Team secures their completed platform to the now-finished bed frame (figure C) and turns their attention to a pulley system that will control the bed's raise-and-lower feature.
- After fitting the upright posts with a series of eye bolts, the teams threads a length of sturdy rope through the bolts.
- To complete the pulley system, they use additional bolts to connect the rope to the platform (figure D).
