Polka-Dot WallsCathie Filian and Steve Piacenza show how polka dots and fabric can totally change the mood of any room.
Materials:embroidery hoops in various sizes fabric scraps scissors fabric glue craft paint paintbrush 1. Separate the embroidery hoops. Leave hoops their natural color or paint the outer hoop a complementary color to the fabric and allow to dry. 2. Trim fabric slightly larger than the size of the embroidery hoop. Place the outer hoop on the table and center the fabric right side down over the hoop. Place inside hoop over the fabric and in the outer hoop (figure A). Tighten the screw on the top.
3. Pull the fabric tight to remove wrinkles. Working on the back of the hoop, trim away excess fabric, leaving a 1/2" border (figure B). To create a finished look, glue excess fabric to the back of the hoop (figure C).
4. Attach to the wall with a small nail or heavy-duty double-stick tape, using the screw clamp as the hanger.
Roman ClayCathie Filian and Steve Piacenza give depth and character to a lifeless wall with Roman clay.
Materials:5" stainless-steel trowel Roman clay 400-grade sandpaper Roman clay wax buffer pad hand drill wet rag cotton rag 1. Prep walls for painting: fill any holes or cracks, wipe down clean and tape off any areas you don't want to paint. No priming is necessary with this technique. 2. Thoroughly stir the clay prior to application. Scoop a medium amount of clay onto a trowel and spread evenly over the wall, working in different directions (figure A). Repeat this process until the entire wall is covered. Let the plaster dry 24 hours.
3. Sand the walls with 400-grade sandpaper, working in a circular motion to achieve a smooth finish (figure B). Wipe walls down with a damp cloth (figure C). Allow to dry.
4. Apply a second coat of Roman clay and repeat steps 2 and 3.5. Using a cotton rag, apply wax on to the wall in a circular motion (figure D). Apply the wax in a thin layer, making sure to work it into all the grooves. Attach a buffing pad to a hand drill and buff the wax into the walls until they have an even shine (figure E). Buff smaller areas by hand; for walls, a hand drill is recommended.
