    The DIY to the Rescue crew patches a large hole over Deontae's bed.

    Materials:

    Joint compound
    Putty knife
    Drywall
    Utility knife
    Drywall tape (mesh adhesive)
    Screwdriver
    Drywall screws
    2 x 4s
    Reciprocating saw

    1. Cut a rectangular drywall patch, larger than the hole, place over damaged area and trace around it. Cut drywall.

    2. To create a backer for the patch, cut two boards 4" larger than the opening. Slip the wood into the opening, center under one side, then install all-purpose screws through the wall and into each end of the board.

    3. Insert the patch and screw into backer board (one screw in each corner).

    4. Place self-adhesive mesh drywall tape over the seams.

    5. Apply two smooth coats of spackle, sanding between each. Add primer and paint.
