    Materials:

    Several types of tile (smaller pieces for base and capitals; porcelain stone chair rail pieces; metal tiles for accents)
    Mastic
    Tile spacers
    Caulk
    Tile grout (both non-sanded latex-modified grout and sanded grout)
    Drop cloth
    2 x 4
    1/2" drywall
    Screws
    Notched trowel
    Wet saw
    Circular saw
    Sponge and bucket
    Soft rubber float
    Tape measure and pencil
    Level
    Reciprocating saw
    Utility knife
    Speed square
    Rubber gloves
    A drill and bits

    1. After purchasing materials, sketch layout onto wall using the level and pencil.

    2. Cut away baseboard as needed for columns, and install 2 x 4 bracing.

    3. Cut drywall strips and attach to cover the 2 x 4 bracing (figure A).

    4. Attach scrap drywall pieces horizontally on the vertical drywall (figure B) to delineate the column from the base and support the tiles.

    5. Use notched trowel to apply mastic to drywall.

    6. Cut tile to fit and apply from bottom up.

    7. Use a wet saw to notch tile at areas where metal inserts will be added (figure C).

    8. Apply mastic and arrange tiles. Install metal decorative tiles by adding mastic to back and pressing in place (figure D).

    9. Measure sides to that only full pieces of tile are visible. Use the smaller pieces at bottom.

    10. Work up from the bottom, adding bullnose pieces on side, and making smaller pieces on side align with front edges.
