    Shoji Screen Doors Installation

    1. Decide what style and design you want and order the system. The Shoji screens come with many facings and wood designs. They are individually custom made so you can get any design you desire or you can create your own. A Shoji screen (figure A) consists of the paper, stiles and rails.

Note: The installation will include a shelf and ledger board with aluminum tracks attached to the bottom. The Shoji screen will hang from the tracks and a valance will cover the tracks (figure B -- an illustration).

    2. To get started attach the tracks to the shelf and ledger board, which will attach to studs in the wall and support the weight of the screen door.

    3. Make marks and secure the tracks according to the screen door instructions.

    4. Use adjustable clamps to hold the tracks in place.

    5. Pre-drill holes with a self-adjusting vix bit (figure C), and screw the tracks into the shelf with the provided hardware.

    6. Attach the shelf and ledger (with the tracks on it) to the wall.

    7. Measure, level and make marks on the wall to locate where to attach the shelf and ledger unit to wall.

    8. Use a laser level and mark the wall appropriate inches up from the floor (90" in this particular case).

    9. Find the studs in the wall and pre-mark the shelf and ledger and pre-drill the holes.

    10. Start the screws in the wood and then attach the shelf and ledger to the studs in the wall at the marks with screws (figure D).

    11. Attach the wheels and hardware to the track -- add the two wheels to each track and the doors will hang off these wheels.

    12. Make sure the height adjustment is in the center so you have maximum flexibility up and down.

    13. Screw the stops into the end of the tracks (figure E) to stop the wheels.

    14. Cut a channel in the floor for the bottom of the track. Most Shoji screen companies make a pre-cut channel you can utilize for this purpose.

    15. If you choose to cut your own channel, to find the cut line there are three options:

      • Use a plumb bob -- hook it to the top of the door hangers and let it hang down.
      • Mount the doors to determine where the channel is to be cut.
      • Use a laser lever to mark the bottom of the track by lining up the beam with the door hangers.

    16. Lay the tape on floor in the correct cutting location to mark where to start and stop cuts.

    17. Use a rail-guided circular saw (figure F) to cut the track into the floor.

    18. With the tracks cut in the floor to create a channel, slide the doors into place. Connect the top of the doors to the wheel and make sure the fins are in the track on the floor.

    19. Attach the valence to the shelf and ledger.

In the final segment our host will install the Shoji bi-fold door.
