Permanent Paneling Attachment- Locate the wall studs and make marks, and for this particular wall the studs are found at the nail marks in the baseboard (figure A).
- Use a laser level and line it up with a stud mark at the bottom of the wall to create a plumb line all the way up the wall to the ceiling. Mark a reference up top and snap a line.
- Use laser level to determine level for the base rail, and then use construction adhesive on the back of the board.
- Secure in place with an impulse nailer (figure B).
- Dry fit the panels.
Note: Be aware of what direction the grain of the wood is in the paneling to make sure you are hanging them all in the same direction. - Cut holes in the paneling where the outlets are located. These must fall within interior panels or you will need to move the boxes.
- Install the panel system working from right to left and bottom to top.
- Use construction adhesive on the panel components, placing five dollops of adhesive in each corner and in the middle (figure C).
- Secure the rails and stiles with an impulse nailer.
- Use a sharp carbide-tipped blade to cut the material (rails). If your walls aren't square the outside stiles may need to be cut.
Baseboard Installation- Remove the old baseboards with a pry bar.
- To cut the baseboard, stand the material upright against the saw fence (figure D) for the cleanest cut.
- Put the new matching baseboards in place with a nail gun.
After eight hours of work the dining and living rooms look completely different with the newly installed cherry paneling. In the next segment our host installs the Shoji screen doors.
