    Removable Panel Installation

Note: Order paneling in advance and about three weeks ahead of time, and be sure to send the dimensions of the room.

Shoji is Japanese for closet door, but for this particular project we're using them as room dividers.

    1. Prep the wall by first removing the baseboards.

    2. Adjust the electrical outlet and cable covers or boxes, and be sure to shut off the power to the electrical box first.

Note: The system consists of three different components:

      • Panels.

      • Stiles, which go alongside each panel.

      • Rails, which go on the top and bottom of each panel (figure A -- a shot of the panel, stiles and rails).

    3. Start from the bottom and put up the base rail and build up from there.

    4. Install the bottom base rail in place on the wall, and find level for the rail and mark the reference lines.

    5. Put one side of the hook-and-loop system on the back of the base rail board. Cut the material to length of the board, pull off the backing and place on the back of the rail board (figure B).

    6. Then attach the other side of the hook-and-loop material, cut to length and pull off adhesive backing.

    7. Find the reference marks on the wall and press down to secure the rail board in place (figure C).

    8. Now it's time to dry fit the interior panels and stiles on the wall to make sure the dimensions are correct and the panels will fit between the wall.

    9. Determine where the cable and electrical openings should go and then measure and cut the holes in the paneling. Note: To make cable holes use a 5/8" paddle bit.

    10. To make the electrical cutouts, drill out the corners and then use a jigsaw.

    11. Put the hook-and-loop material on the back of the stiles.

    12. Put five small pieces of the hook-and-loop material on the back of the panels, which will act as shims and allow the panels to be in proper alignment.

    13. Working from right to left, install the first stile, then adhere the interior panel to the wall (figure D) and the next stile -- continue on working up from the bottom.

In the next segment our host and his helper continue building up the wall with the cherry panels and install the baseboard.
