  • Miterless Molding / Finished Hallway Gallery
  • From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-304F

To add a little panache to the hallway, the Rescue crew teaches sisters Vanessa and Maritza Gualy how to install a miterless urethane crown molding system.

    Materials:

Miterless crown molding system: 4 corner blocks, divider blocks and straight crown molding
    Tape measure
    Hand saw or power saw
    Trim paint
    Urethane base adhesive
Finishing nails & hammer or pneumatic nail gun with nails
Spackle, plastic wood filler or latex caulk
    Paintable caulk

    1. Pre-paint molding with trim color (molding comes already primed).

    2. Apply urethane base adhesive to the back wall and ceiling "contact points" of a molded corner piece.

    3. Position corner block and secure with finishing nail (figure A). The adhesive is quick-setting so a nail or two will hold short pieces. If working on a short wall, repeat in other corner.

    4. Install divider blocks next to the corner blocks, if desired, again applying adhesive to all contact points in the back of the block and securing each piece with a finishing nail.

    5. Measure the space between the corner blocks and cut straight crown molding to fit. Urethane molding can be cut easily using a hand saw or power saw to establish a tight fit.

    6. Install straight crown molding the same way, applying adhesive to the back contact areas. Secure with several nails, as necessary (figure B).

    7. Continue around the room. For long sections, over-cut lengths and then bow the molding to fit tightly in place.

    8. Fill nail holes with spackle, plastic wood filler or latex caulk, then caulk around molding to fill gaps as needed. Touch up with paint.

After the Rescue: A view of the newly re-vamped hallway art gallery.
    After the Rescue:

The two sisters have polished floors that are a work of art, crown molding that add a look of elegance, and finally -- a bathroom with privacy (thank to the glass block installation). In only three days, the hallway has gone from tattered and tired to a mini-gallery worth showing off!
