Walls take a lot of abuse, and drywall can easily get holes knocked in them. If this happens, don't worry. Drywall is easy to patch. Here's how.

Materials:

Spackling compound
Mesh wall-patch
Putty knife
Paint

• First, use sandpaper to clean up the rough edges (figure A) and to rough up the paint around the hole.

• If the hole is between an inch and 3 inches wide, apply some plastic-mesh tape or a metal wall-patch (figure B). For smaller holes, mesh or a patch is not necessary.

• Use a wide putty knife to apply spackling compound and spread it evenly over the patch (figure C).

• Allow the compound to dry fully, then sand it smooth so that it's perfectly level with the wall.
