| Laundry Room Makeover: Preparing the Laundry Room Space |
From "Weekend Handyman" episode WKH-307 |
|
|
 |

In this week's episode of Weekend Handyman, host Paul Ryan does a complete makeover of this, as he says, "pretty bad" laundry room ...
|
| |

that was cluttered, totally disorganized with old appliances.
|
| |

And he converted it with newly painted walls and storage bins, ...
|
| |

a new decorative concrete floor ...
|
| |

and updated plumbing and new appliances that will last for years!

Prepping the Concrete FloorNote: For this particular job the homeowners decided to bring in professionals to prepare the floor for its new paint scheme. - Clear and empty the room.
- Clean and scrape the concrete floor (figure A).
- Apply a muratic acid and water solution to the clean floor, and spray a weak ammonia solution on the floor.
- Then use fresh water to rinse the floor.
- Next the professionals mixed the skim coat with a paddle mixer, and used a concrete mix with a polymer additive. Let the solution sit for one minute.
- Spread slurry over the floor with a squeegee (figure B), and let the floor dry.
Prepping the Walls and Hanging Beadboard- Clear the walls of shelves, pegboard or any other obstacles.
- Measure carefully the size the beadboard that will cover the wall should be, and then cut it to size.
Tip: Put a strip of tape over the cut line (figure C) to prevent edges from chipping out. - Put paneling adhesive on the back in big circles with an "X" in the middle, and another line around the perimeter.
- Lift and adhere the beadboard paneling in place with 1-1/2" finishing nails on the wall to cover the holes (figure D). Don't forget to mark the stud locations before the panels go up.
Note: If you need to lift the paneling once it's against the wall you can use a pry bar at the bottom.
Painting the Concrete Walls- Clean the concrete walls by spraying a bleach and water solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) over mildew areas.
Safety Alert: Be sure to wear rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator and keep the area well ventilated. - Let the solution set a bit and then wash and rinse clean with warm water and a sponge.
- Paint the walls with a paint that has mildewcide in it (figure E).
- Install foam product baseboards around the bottom of the wall.
- Nail the baseboard into the wall.
- Use panel adhesive to adhere the base to the concrete walls.
In the next segment our host gets started on the concrete floor.
