    Prepping the Concrete Floor

Note: For this particular job the homeowners decided to bring in professionals to prepare the floor for its new paint scheme.

    1. Clear and empty the room.

    2. Clean and scrape the concrete floor (figure A).

    3. Apply a muratic acid and water solution to the clean floor, and spray a weak ammonia solution on the floor.

    4. Then use fresh water to rinse the floor.

    5. Next the professionals mixed the skim coat with a paddle mixer, and used a concrete mix with a polymer additive. Let the solution sit for one minute.

    6. Spread slurry over the floor with a squeegee (figure B), and let the floor dry.

Prepping the Walls and Hanging Beadboard

    1. Clear the walls of shelves, pegboard or any other obstacles.

    2. Measure carefully the size the beadboard that will cover the wall should be, and then cut it to size.

Tip: Put a strip of tape over the cut line (figure C) to prevent edges from chipping out.

    3. Put paneling adhesive on the back in big circles with an "X" in the middle, and another line around the perimeter.

    4. Lift and adhere the beadboard paneling in place with 1-1/2" finishing nails on the wall to cover the holes (figure D). Don't forget to mark the stud locations before the panels go up.

Note: If you need to lift the paneling once it's against the wall you can use a pry bar at the bottom.

    Painting the Concrete Walls

    1. Clean the concrete walls by spraying a bleach and water solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) over mildew areas.

Safety Alert: Be sure to wear rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator and keep the area well ventilated.

    2. Let the solution set a bit and then wash and rinse clean with warm water and a sponge.

    3. Paint the walls with a paint that has mildewcide in it (figure E).

    4. Install foam product baseboards around the bottom of the wall.

    5. Nail the baseboard into the wall.

    6. Use panel adhesive to adhere the base to the concrete walls.

In the next segment our host gets started on the concrete floor.
