The first addition Golden makes to the laundry room is a chalkboard. She cautions to make sure the chalkboard isn't too high on the wall to be within reach.

    1. Make tick marks across the wall (figure A) using a level and a tape measure or ruler. Mark on all four sides.

    2. Connect the tick marks using a straightedge.

    3. Apply painters tape to the edge of the connected lines.

    4. Add butcher paper outside the chalkboard edge with painters tape. The butcher paper will protect the newly painted walls from any excess spray.

Expert tip: Remember to work in a well-ventilated area or wear a dust mask.

    5. Spray the chalkboard paint from side to side (figure C) in the exposed area.

    6. Allow 2 to 3 hours to dry.

    7. Once the chalkboard is dry, remove the butcher paper and painters tape.

    8. Apply a 3" door casing on all four sides of the area. This will add a definite frame to the chalkboard.

Golden plans to construct a folding station (figure D) within the exposed closet by installing several shelves.

    9. Install the first shelf 36" from the ground. Make tick marks with measuring tape and pencil (figure E).

    10. Connect the tick marks with a level (figure F).

    11. Find the studs in the wall and mark with a pencil.

    12. Drill L-brackets into the studs.

    13. Drop solid shelves into the L-brackets.

    14. Repeat steps 10-13 to install second shelf.

    15. Hang a hook bracket to hold cleaning supplies in the second closet.

Interior design expert Merri Lee Pitkanen suggests combining required tools with efficient storage space. Both aspects need to be addressed while creating a pleasing space.
