  • From "DIY Tools & Techniques"
    episode DIT-330

Host David Thiel creates a sandpaper storage roll.

This is a simple box that holds rolls of sandpaper on a dowel so you can dispense the paper easily. The dowel is held in place by a screw on one end. To replace the sandpaper, simply remove the screw to pull out the dowel. Then, slide some new rolls on and screw the dowel back into place. An acrylic top protects the paper from dust.

    Here’s how to build it:

    1. Cut wood for a four-part box. You only need a top, bottom, and two sides. The other two sides of the box are acrylic.

    2. Use a drill press to drill holes almost the same size as your dowel rod in the two sides of the box (you will need to make the holes just a slight amount bigger so the rod will slide in and out). Drill the hole all the way through one side of the box and halfway through the other side.

    3. Put the pieces of the box together. Nail it with the half hole facing the inside of the box (figure A).

    4. Use duct tape to hinge the two pieces of acrylic together. Start from the center of the acrylic. Then, use a second piece of duct tape to hinge the acrylic to the top of the box (figure B).

    5. Put your sandpaper rolls on the dowel rod and then screw the rod into place.
