  • Plastic Tub Storage System
  • From "DIY Tools & Techniques"
    episode DIT-327

Plastics tubs are great for small-item shop storage. But then you've got to deal with storing the actual tubs. In this segment, host David Thiel makes a storage rack to organize plastic tubs.

The storage rack is made of 3/4" plywood, and features casters for easy transport. Cleats inside the rack support tub handles and allow tubs to slide easily into and out of the rack.

    1. Cut the plywood sides of the rack first (the size of the tubs will determine dimension). Mark top and bottom of sides.

    2. Cut equal pieces for top and bottom of the rack, then cut 2 cleats for each tub.

    3. Attach cleats onto the side of the box. For extra support, use both fasteners and blue. Cleats should be placed in some location on each side so cleats will reside directly opposite one another. Misalignment will prevent the tubs from fitting correctly.

    4. Attach the four pieces to form a box (figure B), then cut a 1/4" piece of masonite for the back.

    5. Staple back to the box. Tack back down on one side, then the other (figure C).

    6. Add locking, swiveling casters and decorate the box as desired (figure D).
