  • Flat Stock Racks
  • From "DIY Tools & Techniques"
    episode DIT-327

Host David Thiel demonstrates different ways of building a flat storage rack for your shop. These racks keep stock off the floor and away from moisture to prevent warpage.

This simple storage rack (figure A) is made from pipes and flanges. It works best with a wall that is already covered by drywall.

    1. Purchase three each of 12" galvanized pipes, flanges and end caps.

    2. Screw each end cap to the end of a pipe (figure B).

    3. Use a stud finder to locate and mark three walls studs. Screw flanges into the studs using long screws. Use a square or straight board in between screwing in each flange to ensure they are properly aligned (figure C)

    4. Tighten pipes into the flanges (figure D).

If you have open studs in your shop, try creating this flat stock rack (figure E) that utilizes gussets that are attached to the studs.

    1. Cut 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood into equal triangles to create each gusset.

    2. Cut a 2x4 to fit between the plywood triangles. When cutting the corner, make sure the board is oriented in the same direction as the triangles.

    3. Clamp the three pieces together (figure F), then drill holes through all three.

    4. Insert 1/4" carriage bolts. Use a washer with the nut (figure G).

    5. To mount the rack, use a right-angle drill to drill between studs. Use a carriage bolt to attach gusset to the stud (figure H).
