  • Getting the Measurements Right: Table Saw Miter Gauges
  • From "DIY Tools & Techniques"
    episode DIT-312

Cutting accurate miters on a table saw can be tricky with a stock miter fence. Host David Thiel takes a look at some commercially-available gauges.

    • A Kreg precision miter gauge has holes placed at often-used stops. A pin drops into the hole to mark the stop accurately. Remove the pin (figure A) when using stops other than the pre-determined often-used ones.

    • The fence has two stops of its own. A permanent stop remains against the table. It adjusts left to right. Use the scale on the top of the fence to determine the proper spacing. A flip stop (figure B) flips out of the way when it's not in use.

    • This miter gauge has an extension bar for use with larger pieces. The stop has two lockdowns (figure C). Move the stop to the proper location and lock down the first stop. Then, turn the brass wheel to make fine adjustments. This gauge also has a small flip down stop and adjustment features on the bar that fits into the miter slot on the table saw so that you can fit it into the slot tightly, which is important for accurate cuts.

    • The bar and stop on this miter gauge (figure D) has tiny teeth built-in. When the teeth meet, they lock together to provide a precise measurement. This miter gauge also has a flip stop on the bar. It has good positive stops that you can lock down by releasing the bar, rolling it where you need it and dropping on the back into place.

    • This miter gauge (figure E) has a bar that slides back and forth to achieve the perfect angle. A plunger on the back drops into one of several holes at each 10 degree mark to lock the bar into place. Like the others, this miter gauge has a flip stop.

    • Use a miter sled (figure F) when you have bigger pieces that need extra support. The sled fits into the miter slot, like a regular miter gauge, but it also slides across the top of the table for added support. The gauge moves in individual increments for each degree and has an extension for longer pieces.
