It can be difficult and dangerous to sand small pieces with a palm sander. Host David Thiel shares a viewer's idea for a safe and simple way to sand. This viewer made a jig to hold a wooden jigsaw puzzle piece. If you try to use a palm sander to sand the piece, you have to hold the puzzle piece with your hand, which could be hazardous. Also, the motion of the random orbital sander can cause the piece to pin away from you. This jig holds it into place (figure A). (Complete instructions continued below.)

This wooden jigsaw puzzle piece jig can really help with cutting and sanding.

- To begin making the jig, trace the puzzle shape on a piece of masonite.
- Cut around the traced line using a rotary tool (figure B). Use a 360 degree bit so you can cut in any direction. Cut slightly wide of your line. You may choose to make a clearance hole.
- Put the template over a piece of non-slip padding.
- Next, put the shape into the template, then start sanding.
- Use a detail sander to get into the crevices of the puzzle piece.
Tip: use a simple circle template (figure C) to help you sand several different shapes.
