Push sticks and push blocks are necessary tools for the table saw and joiner. They act as extensions for your hands to keep them away from the blade and out of harm's way when cutting.- This example (figure A) shows some of the push sticks that you can get at the hardware store. The smaller push stick works well unless you're working with a long board. Sometimes you will get a little lift from the rotation of the blade when using that kind of push stick. The bigger, more complicated push sticks have a longer notch for holding the board eliminating a lift problem.
- You can also make your own push sticks out of scrap pieces of wood (figure B).
- Use push blocks (figure C) with a joiner. The push block has a rubber pad on the bottom to hold it against the board during the cut. It helps you push the board along the blade and provides a barrier between your hands and the cutter. You can also get a push stick that has a kickstand underneath so you can use it to push the board from behind as well.
Making a Push Block:
- Cut a rabbet into one end of a block of wood.
- Next, attach a small block of wood into the rabbet to use as the kickstand.
- Use spray adhesive to add a piece of rubber to keep the push block from slipping.
- Finally, attach a handle to the other side of the block (figure C).
