Host David Thiel explains the differences in hardwoods.
- Cherry wood (figure A) is designed to be a turning blank. You can use it to turn a bowl on a lathe.
- Maple has quilted bands (figure B) that are accented when stained.
- Zebra wood (figure C) provides an exotic look. It's also very expensive.
White oak (figure D) is often used in flooring, and is beautiful stained.Walnut is a common wood that doesn't necessarily require stain. A clear coat to protect it is all you need.Note: when staining, remember that the same kind of wood can produce different looks when it comes from different parts of the country (figure E). Also, pieces of wood with grain will stain differently.
