Host David Thiel explains how to use a power hand planer. There are several types of power planers. One example is a portable jointer. It has an adjustable infeed table (figure A) and an outfeed table. Also, this planer has two knives (figure B) for removing material along with an exhaust port that should point away when in use. Another feature of the tool is a 45 degree angel notch (figure C) in the infeed table, allowing you to find the corners of the wood so that you can make a bevel.
Power hand planers are used mainly for trimming doors (figure D). When trimming the end of a door, trim one end with the grain part of the way. Then, turn the tools around and trim to that point from the other end. This prevents the end-grain on either end from tearing out.You can also use a power hand planer to cut rabbets. Set the fence all the way over toward the edge of the machine so that you're only taking off little amounts of material at a time. This will take a few passes.
