    Figure A
A drill press can be used to create wheels for toy cars or pulleys. Here, David Thiel shares the technique.

For this application, David uses a special bit for the drill press. The bit has facets on it similar to teeth on a saw blade, therefore it is knows as a saw tooth drill bit. When you put a piece of wood against the bit (figure A), you can cut a groove easily.

    1. To do this, put a fence on the drill press table and keep the flat end of the dowel against it. (figure B) This will maintain the attitude of the dowel against the blade during the cut.

    2. Rotate the dowel toward you as you apply pressure to the dowel against the blade. Start with a light amount of pressure and slowly increase it as you make the cut. Applying too much pressure can damage the blade.

    3. Even if you’re cutting a small wooden wheel, use a longer piece and then cut off the part you need on a band saw.

    4. Use a drill press with a regular bit on it to cut the center (figure C)
