Host David Thiel explains how to use different bits with an air hammer.

An air hammer is essentially a mini-jackhammer. It has a pneumatic piston that is driven back and forth driving an assortment of tools into different types of materials.

Safety Note: wear appropriate safety equipment including safety glasses and earplugs. Also, unplug the air hammer when changing bits.

    • To cut steel with an air-hammer, you could use a nibbler-like bit (figure A).

    • To take out rivets, use a bit with a center divot that lines up with the rivet. The chisel point then removes the rivet (figure B).

    • Round-tipped bits will drill holes or make decorative dimple effects on steel. It can also be used for demolition, such as taking apart a concrete block (figure C).

    • A flat spade masonry bit will remove mortar.

    • To cut through a steel muffler, use a bit with teeth on the tip.
