Host David Thiel explains how a bird's mouth bit is used for making columns.
1. Install the bird's mouth bit into the router.
2. Make sure both fences (figure A) are perfectly even with each other.

3. Run one edge of each piece of wood through the router (figure B).
4. The cut edge of one piece fits together with the uncut edge from the next (figure C).
5. You can use the same bit to create a cap for the top of your column (figure D).

If you use tapered wood blanks, you can make a planter using this same method. Rather than straight up and down like a column, the tapered blanks will give you a large opening at one end and a smaller one at the other. Fit a bottom piece at the smaller end, and you've got a handcrafted planter.
