Host David Thiel explains how to make your own blade height gauge out of one block of wood.Materials:
Three inch wide block of wood
Six-inch ruler
Double-sided tape
Small piece of acrylic
Bolt
Washer
Knob
- Take the block of wood, and cut a groove in it about 2-1/2 inches wide, 3/8-inch from the side of the block. Make sure that the groove is the right size to fit the piece of acrylic.
- The second cut is a dado cut (figure A). Make sure it is wide enough for the six-inch ruler that you have. It will run through the groove that you just cut. It should be recessed enough to insert the ruler, and have room for the blade to fit. When you make the dado cut, be sure to apply pressure on the inside of the block to prevent the outside from collapsing.
- Drill a hole in the wood on the thin side for the bolt to fit through, which is where the knob will be inserted.
- Cut the acrylic into the shape you need. Use a scroll saw to cut the hole in the acrylic, then smooth the edges out with sandpaper.
- Insert the ruler into the dado. Use double-sided tape to hold it in place. Make sure the ruler is aligned with the base of the block.
- Slide the acrylic into the groove that was cut in the first step (figure B).
- Insert the bolt (figure C), and put the washer on. Then, screw the knob on.
