A rotary tool may be the most under-appreciated tool in the shop. Host David Thiel demonstrates how versatile it can be when repairing a stool.

    Stool Repair

    1. Use the appropriate rotary tool tip (figure A).

    2. If necessary, use a sanding tip to grind away old glue and prepare surface for application of new glue.

    3. Engage the shaft lock.

    4. Install the tip, and then tighten.

    5. Sand out old glue from mortise (figure B), then remove old glue from the tenon.

    6. Choose the correct glue and apply to mortise.

    7. Slip your tenons.

    8. Clean any excess glue with a damp sponge.

    9. Clamp the pieces firmly together (figure C), again cleaning any excess glue that may have squeezed out. Set aside, then allow it to dry.

    Tips to Remember:

    • Clean excess glue while it is still wet.

    • When clamping the pieces together, go slowly to ensure the clamp is applying pressure to the correct point.

    • A rotary tool can be handy when working in a tight space.

    Safety Tip:

    • Wear safety glasses and gloves when operating a rotary tool.
