    On larger jobs around the house, mixing concrete by hand can be time and labor-intensive. Renting a concrete mixer will cut your time and work in half.

    Concrete Mixing

    1. Place the mixer near area where you will pour.

    2. Tip the mixer back and forth, making it easier to pour the concrete mix and water into the hopper (figure A).

    3. Place 2/3 of the water into the hopper per 40-pound bag (figure B). Reserve the remainder to adjust consistency as needed.

    4. Tip the mixer back over so the tines work more efficiently, then turn mixer on.

    5. Check the consistency of the mortar. Add water if necessary.

    6. Let the concrete rest for a couple of minutes before pouring.

    Safety Tip: Remember to always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes when mixing and pouring concrete. Also, consider wearing a dust mask to avoid inhaling any concrete dust.
