A chipper/shredder is great for cleaning up branches and other yard debris and turning them into a fine mulch. Here, David Thiel offers a closer look.- A chipper/shredder can be handy for cleaning up leaves and branches and turning them into sawdust (figure A).
- The Vermeer model demonstrated has a diesel engine. It has a glow plug to help it start in cold weather. The motor is independent from the chipper feeder cutters.
- The chute is moveable so you can direct the sawdust to wherever you like.
- This model has a safety bar that stops the machine when you push the bar back. It also has a speed adjustment. Keep in mind, the larger the branch, the more time it will take to cut.
- The engagement bar starts the cutters. Move it slowly into gear. Once its set and the machine is running up to speed, lock it down.
