Host, David Thiel, and author Steve Ettlinger discuss hedge trimmers, comparing the blades, special features, and the differences in gas and electric powered models. - The hedge trimmers from American Ash are manual and have wooden handles and a knob that adjusts the tension against the blades (figure A). This model features wavy edges on the blades (figure B). Wavy or serrated edges are best because they grab the branches -- for this reason, Steve says you should never buy hedge trimmers with straight blades.
The second model is a cordless electric Homelite that comes with two batteries. It has a double reciprocating blade -- two blades that slide back and forth across one another (figure C) -- for a cut that's quicker, faster, and cleaner than a single reciprocating cut.The corded Craftsman model is a full power model. It has a retainer clip to hold the cord in place during use (figure D). This is a 20"-22" model: Steve says to get a hedge trimmer thats a little bit longer than your hedge is wide. For safety, make sure the cord is out of the way to avoid cutting.
A professional gas-powered model from Little Wonder only cuts on one side because it has a long, 30" blade. Theres a one-inch gap between the teeth (figure E). This is a heavier model with a big engine.A 60", 14 lb. model from Little Wonder allows you to cut the top of a tall hedge. It has an adjustable head for cutting topiaries (figure F).
