Host David Thiel demonstrates the care and maintenance of a chainsaw: cleaning the filter, replacing the spark plug, greasing the bearings, and sharpening the teeth. - Take the air filter out and soak in soapy water (figure A). Squeeze excess moisture from the filter and allow to dry, then put a little motor oil on top to help it collect dust particles more easily.
- Examine the pull cord and make sure it's in good shape (figure B). If necessary, replace the pull cord.
Replace the spark plug annually (figure C).Lubricating the chain is important: make sure theres enough oil in the well. The chain needs appropriate tension. If the blade does not drop right into the track (figure D) or if it hangs loose, the tension should be adjusted.
Reverse the blade to get more life from it.The bearing in the front of the blade needs to be lubricated as well. There's a tool that fits right into the hole that will add oil directly to the area. (figure E).

If the chain is dull, use a special jig attached to a file (figure F) or rotary tool (figure G) to sharpen the teeth in both directions (figure H).
Finally, keep the guard on your chainsaw to protect it when not in use (figure I).
