Circular Saws are great for cutting straight lines, but for scrollwork or cutting curves, you will need a jigsaw. Here, host Cheri Van Bynen offers a few jigsaw basics.

    Jigsaw

    • Available corded or cordless.
    • Most models have a safety release that must be depressed before engaging the trigger.
    • The base plate is adjustable, allowing for various bevel cuts (figure A).
    • Some models will have adjustable settings (figure B) that change the movement of the blade, giving either a smooth finish or rough finish.

    Tips to Remember:

    • Unplug the saw or remove the battery when changing a blade.

    • Purchase a high-quality blade (figure C), designed for the material you are working with.

    • Always start the blade before touching it to the material to be cut.

    • Wear safety glasses when cutting.

    • Don't force the saw. Forcing the saw could break the blade and cause injury.
