Circular saws are used primarily for rough-cutting wood in a straight line. There are many things to know about them, and many safety considerations. Host Cheri Van Bynen offers a brief summary.Circular Saws
- Blade is circular and has a guard (figure A) to protect both blade and operator.
- Base plate can be adjusted both for beveling and depth of cut.
- Available in both right-handed and left-handed models. The standard is a left-handed model.
- Cordless circular saws are available (figure B).
Tips to Remember:- The teeth of the blade should protrude just below the wood being cut (figure C).
- Be aware of the electrical cord position at all times.
- A Speed square can be a great guide for cutting. Align your saw with your cutting line, and position the speed square against the opposite side of the baseplate.
- Position your saw to the outside of a drawn cut line since the blade will eat away wood equal to its thickness.
- Make sure the saw fits you and your hand well (figure D) and is the proper version: right or left-handed.
- Circular saws are available corded or cordless; choose the one that best fits your needs.
