Used correctly, sandpaper can be a true friend. Used incorrectly, it can be your biggest enemy.

Sandpaper comes in different "grits" -- with a higher grit designating a finer abrasive texture. Here, Cheri Van Bynen offers pointers to polish your sandpaper knowledge.

60-Grit Sandpaper

• Very abrasive.
  
• Should only be used on very rough surfaces.
  

120-Grit Sandpaper

• Very fine.
  
• Can be used on most surfaces and between coats of varnish.
