Hosts Brad Staggs and Lynda Lyday get right into the questions --Exterior Door Options Problem: Could you give me some information on exterior door options and installation.
Solution:- Three styles of exterior doors are available: steel, wood and synthetic.
- Steel doors are the least expensive, but they are easily dented and difficult to fix.
- Wood doors are very pretty, but unless they are well protected from elements, they will warp, split or chip.
- A synthetic door is a great choice. It is a fiberglass veneer over foam. It is durable and good looking.
- When installing a new door, replace the surround with the new door (figure A).
DIY Tips: - Make sure to seal the top and bottom edges of all new doors with a finish coat of paint or sealer to prevent moisture from getting into the door and warping it.
- Locksets for exterior doors may be called "entry locksets," "keyed locks" or "exterior locks." They can be locked or unlocked from both sides of the door, using a key, a button or a throw latch.
- Recycle! Instead of throwing out that old door removed from the house. Convert it into a simple workbench.
Pocket Doors Problem: What is the best way to remove pocket doors? Solution: - First, look up along side and top of the door and find out where the latches are. Once you have found the latches, remove the casing and jam stops from that side.
- Now that your two roller latches are exposed, try to release them from the door.
Adjusting Sliding Glass Doors Problem: How can you adjust sliding glass doors? Solution: - Check the track and clear it of any debris. Try using a dust vacuum or brush.
- Apply candle waxing wax or soap and rub it on the track for lubrication.
- An application of silicone spray would also help it roll smoothly.
