    Adding Wall Storage

Wall storage has come a long way from screwing a hook into a stud to hold the rake: Karl sets the Peltons up with the latest in wall-mounted storage products to keep their new workshop ship-shape.

    • Mounting storage units on block walls can be tricky. To give a wider range of storage options, Karl mounted 2x4 lumber to the walls with anchors designed for use with block walls. Remember to drive anchors into the center of blocks instead of in between the blocks for a more stable hold.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety glasses and ear protection when drilling into cinderblock or any type of masonry.

    • Before drilling any holes, determine the type, number and placement of the storage units. Then, secure 2x4 lumber to the wall to provide "studs" for attaching the units. Make sure to keep the lumber pieces level and plumb.

    • With the lumber in place, install the units according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use screws or other recommended hardware to attach the pieces to the lumber.

    • The right storage units can help organize any crafter (figure A) or stow often-used tools in style (figure B).
