    1. Measure the area where the shelves will be located to determine both width and depth of shelves. Figure in the height of the bike while on the miniature lift.

    2. Transfer the measurements to 3/4" birch plywood and make the length-wise cuts before cutting boards to length.

    3. Start assembly by pre-drilling holes along the edge of the first piece. Once the holes are drilled, position the first two pieces together and use two inch screws to install (figure A). Assemble the following pieces in the same manner.

    4. In this demonstration, the frame work is measured down 13-3/4" on both ends. A framing square is used to scribe a line to mark pre-drilling area. A 3/16" bit is used for pre-drilling.

    5. With the holes pre-drilled, the first shelf is positioned (figure B). Install one screw, then use a framing square to keep the shelf positioned while the rest of the screws are installed. Repeat process for second shelf.

    6. A mounting strip -- stock that's cut to length -- is needed on the top and bottom of the unit. Before shelves can be hung, the wall stud locations need to be determined and the measurements transferred to the mounting strip.

    7. Once the mounting strip is pre-drilled, get help with lifting the strip into place (figure C). Sink a couple of self-tapping screws into the side while pre-drilling the diamond plate. Finally, install the remaining screws.

    8. Repeat these steps to build the second set of shelves.
