    1. Mark a level line around the room as determined point. Measure from the ceiling to the line to determine the lowest point of the ceiling along the walls (measure all walls).

    2. Next, measure 12-1/4" down from the lowest point. Transfer this measurement all the around the room, snapping chalk line (figure A).

    3. Next, determine the location of studs and use the chalk line or pencil (figure B) to mark stud placement.

    4. Install the J-tracks at the end of the panels. Then set first panel level with the horizontal chalk line at the 12-1/4" measurement. Use screws long enough to go into the studs at least 1" deep to secure the panel at every slot along the stud line throughout the first row.

    5. To start the second panel, align the tongue on the top of the second panel with the groove on the bottom of the first row. Drill a screw into every slot along the stud line (figure C).

    6. Continue process until all slatwall is installed.

    Tips:

    • Begin and end the slat wall in a corner and allow room for expansion when creating your layout.

    • When installing slat wall around windows and doors, take measurements and trim the panels to size. Always cut planks face up with a fine-toothed hand saw (10-12 point) or face down with a rotary power saw (carbide tipped blade) to assure a clean-cut edge. For grid plank, always consider the horizontal groove alignment before cutting.

    • Install the planks with the tongue side facing toward predominate direction of view for the best visual effect.

    • A variety of accessories, including hooks, baskets, shelves, and cabinets work together with the panels to help get items off of the floor and out of the way. The more panels that are installed, the more storage capacity is created.

Adding an Epoxy Coating the Garage Floor

Since homeowner and artist Kendra Lendsey will be using the garage as a professional workshop, the crew decides that the garage floor should be painted to give a fresh appearance. A paint with an epoxy coating is applied.

Tips for Using an Epoxy-Finish Paint:

    • Use a hose or pressure washer to clean the floor. Start at the back of the garage and wash toward the door. Many epoxy products come with a cleaner.

    • Allow the floor to completely dry, which will allow proper bonding between the epoxy paint the floor surface.

    • Always follow manufacturer's instructions for working with this type of product.

    • Many products can’t be applied below a certain temperature so winter application needs to be avoided unless the garage can be heated for the period needed for proper drying.

    • Most epoxy products require mixing one component with another and allowing the two components to bond before application. Be sure to mix thoroughly and wait the advised amount of time.

    • After mixing and waiting the appropriate time, apply the mixture to the floor is small, easily-workable areas (about a 4' square area). Leave yourself an exit point so you don't end up painted into a corner. A paint roller with a long handle works well.

    • After the first coat, apply a second coat if needed. If the product being used has flakes that need to be spread over the floor surface, be sure to apply before the last coat dries. Again, be sure to consult the manufacturer's recommended use and application instructions.
