    Patching the Wall and Floor

    1. Attach vertical framing boards by screwing in a 3" deck screw at an angle. You need to angle to make sure the boards "won't" pull up -- especially with a stairway.

    2. Place the 1x filler board (figure A) in the floor and secure with pin nails.

    3. Trim any boards that stick out with a reciprocating saw and then chisel to finish it off.

    4. Put new drywall in the wall and patch with joint compound.

    5. Put on bottom plate (figure B -- we used the top board from the old stairway for this) by pin nailing it down.

Tip: Whenever you're doing a project where materials "may" be thrown out, make sure you can't use them for another project before discarding quickly.

In the next segment the metal framework is secured into place.
