Attaching Rails and Adding the Treads

Note: You have two choices for the railing -- a vinyl one or an aluminum one (figure A -- used on the show). The vinyl one will adjust to either a right or left side handrail. The aluminum one needs to be ordered specifically for a right or left side application.

    1. Attach the hand rails-- adjust them to the staircase.

    2. Pre-drill holes (if it is an aluminum rail) and attach it with panhead screws (figure B).

    3. The treads come unfinished and it is up to you to decide what you want them to look like.

    4. Cut off excess aluminum at the end.

    5. Smooth the rough end with an abrasive pad and plug it with endcap.

Expert Tip: When you choose the aluminum railing, you can use a soft abrasive pad to put an even grain pattern in the handrail, and you can keep the color even by applying lemon oil with a soft cloth.

    6. Install the landing rail. Screw to post on bottom and top, bolt into landing (figure C) and paint.

    7. Install the stair treads (figure D). Decide how you want the treads to look. Each coat of polyurethane takes approximately eight hours to dry, so paint them ahead of time.

    8. Drill holes, slide the treads on and screw them in from the bottom.
