    Day One

    Notes:

    • Check your local building codes before you begin this project.

    • Order your spiral stairway kit. You can order a standard kit or a fully assembled stairway that arrives ready to install. The kits arrive with all the parts included. You can purchase them in either metal or wood and they are readily available in heights up to 114".

    • If you order a standard spiral stairway kit, you just need to measure from floor to floor and decide what diameter that you'd like (figure A).

    • When the kit arrives, go through and check the pieces to know what you are working with.

    • Gather all your tools.

    Removing the Existing Stairway

    1. You want to take apart as much of the stairs as possible, a section at a time. Begin by loosening the balusters. By loosening all the balusters, you can easily take out the railing.

    2. Pry out the facing with a crowbar.

    3. Pull off the nails of the next boards in order to get at the stringer.

Expert Tip: When you're dismantling a large object such as a stairway, it's best to take it apart in small pieces because this way helps in preventing injuries.

    4. If you have to, take a kick-boxing approach to the treads and then some pushing and shoving to get to the other stringer.

    5. Repair any floor or wall damage.

Expert Tip: If you have a nail hole through the drywall that you need to patch, take the rounded end of a tool -- such as a screwdriver -- and push a dimple into it. This makes the hole easier to spackle.

    6. Tape joints with dry wall tape (figure B) and fill holes with mudding compound if necessary.

    7. Paint wall if necessary.

    8. Use a temporary jack to support the platform (figure C) until you get the beam removed from the corner of the loft.

    9. Use a reciprocating saw to cut the toenails of the support beam (figure D), and then jack up the loft. You can now move the support beam to where you want it temporarily.

    10. Patch the post hole in the floor.

    11. Take out the temporary jack.
