With the new deck-extension completed at the home of Major League Remodel host Denny Janson (figure A), the next phase of this project is the installation of the authentic stadium seats. To secure the seats, a railing and back-stop must first be added onto the deck.

    Stadium-Seats Installation

    Materials

    Pressure treated lumber
    Circular saw
    Tape measure
    Speed square
    Cordless drill
    Galvanized bolts

Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with power tools.

    Steps:

    • Begin by measuring and marking the side posts at a height of 34 inches (figure B). This will be a good height for the handrails.

    • Use a circular saw to cut the posts to the designated height using a circular saw.

    • Wood blocks are used as spacers to hold the backer board in position. Place the spacer blocks and position the backer board on top of the spacers, in contact with the posts.

    • With the backer-board resting on the spacers, secure the backer board to the posts by pre-drilling holes (figure C), then fastening the board to the posts using galvanized bolts.

    • With the backer board secured, the seats can be brought in and positioned with their backs against the backer board (figure D).

    • Pre-drill holes for the seat attachment, then bolt the seats to the backer board using galvanized bolts (figure E).

    • Since the seats are all connected together -- and are fairly large and heavy -- this part of the job will require at least one person to hold the seats in position while another person installs the mounting bolts (figure F).

    • Once the seats are installed, the project is nearly done. The last step is to build and install a side hand-rail. To build the hand-rail, begin by installing a 2x4 across the top of the two side posts using galvanized screws.

    • Lay two 2x2's horizontally on a flat surface, then attach 2x2's vertically every 4 inches to create a ladder-like structure (figure G). Fasten the 2x2's together using wood screws.

    • Once the structure is complete, position it beneath the 2x4 you installed to the top of the posts, and fasten it from underneath with galvanized screws (figure H).

With the side-rails installed and the seats secure, the stadium-seating installation is complete. This provides a novel sports feel to a backyard deck that is certain to impress sports-enthusiasts at your next backyard barbecue or party.

Tip: Denny was able to obtain these stadium seats from Riverside Stadium in Cincinnati, but you don't need to have high-level sports connections to find seats like these. Outdoor stadiums replace their seats from time to time, and the old ones may turn up in salvage yards, auctions and classified-ad sales. Check local and online resources; you may well be able to find seats like these at a bargain price.

In the segment that follows, Denny takes this remodel inside to build a rotating display case for sports memorabilia.
